In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?
AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?
My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….
1) Go to any online book supplier,
2) Randomly choose a category,
3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,
4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book, and any other details.
5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,
6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?
I looked at the category list in Amazon, went for Science and Nature and this cover caught my eye almost immediately. How could I resist! And who knew this would be in Science and Nature. Well, I didn’t anyway.
The book blurb reads….Pippa Mattinson, dog-training specialist, tells you everything you need to know about training and caring for your new puppy. From preparing the house and garden before the puppy arrives, to introducing your new friend to all the family (including children and other animals), and solving problems like crying, night waking, feeding, upset stomachs, biting, chewing and jumping up, this book is packed with all you need to know as a puppy owner.
I think that says it all really.
Number of pages – 224
On Amazon UK there are 136 five star reviews, 17 four star and only 8, all told, in the lower ranges and out of 17 reviews on Amazon US 16 are five star and one three star.
Buy or pass? I’d BUY.
If I was in the market for a new pup (actually I’m always in the market 😉 it’s the other half who’s not) I’d definitely go for this book, but the Kindle price of £7.93 is on the high side. When I looked at other options I could buy brand new hard copies from other dealers at considerably lower prices. A good deal is to be had for members of Amazon Prime but, as I’m not a member, I would buy the book from one of the other sources. Checking out a few reviews it seems the general consensus is it’s clear, informative and easy to follow, covering everything a new puppy owner would need to know, as well as the more experienced dog owner, along with training tips and guidance. Apparently the author can be contacted for advice which is a nice touch.

Having zero interest in dogs this would be a definite pass from me. I don’t know where some publishers are coming from, charging that much for a Kindle book – with novels I prefer to read on my Kindle (app on my Nexus), but, yes, manuals need to be in hard copy 🙂

I’d have to have a hard copy of this book too, I expect there would be lots of lovely pictures which my old style kindle could only show in black and white. I think I would shop around on price too.

I would have to get this in book form as I think you’d need to flick back and forth and I do not like that on a Kindle. However I could not bring this into the house as it would put ideas into the heads of others and I can’t handle taking on a puppy for the foreseeable future…and it might weaken my resolve 🙂
I must add that I am particularly drawn to your Cathy’s Coffee Time picture as well – it had me salivating just like my Poppy does at the sound of a knife on a chopping board!!

Yes, the book wouldn’t work too well on Kindle for the reason you mention. Just as well as it’s much cheaper in book form. Dogs have an inbuilt sensor where food is concerned 😀

I’m the dog person in this relationship. If it was left to my other half he wouldn’t have one although he does love our present dog. You have a lovely weekend too ❤ 🙂
