Friday Five Challenge ~ Would you Buy or Pass? .@rosieamber1 #FridayFiveChallenge Dead Secret #crime #suspense

Rosie Amber’s Friday Five Challenge, involves taking only five minutes to choose a book cover which appeals instantly. So take a break …..and have a browse.

In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?

AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?

My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….

1) Go to any online book supplier,

2) Randomly choose a category,

3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,

4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book, and any other details.

5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,

6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?

Rather than choose a specific category this week, I went for new arrivals for the last 30 days. I passed a couple that caught my eye as I was scrolling because they were part of a series. Then I saw this one..

The book description reads as follows….

Shocking family secrets come to light when a young woman is murdered

“If you read one detective thriller this year make it “Dead Secret.” I really couldn’t put this mystery down. Great pace, well-developed characters with some very dark pasts.” Ann Abrams

“A brilliant new detective writer who will have you reading all night. I loved it.” Chris Child

Who killed Amy Hill?
Amy Hill, a nineteen-year-old student, is strangled and her body dumped on open ground in the city. New police partners, D.I. Jim Neal and D.S. Ava Merry are called in to investigate this brutal crime. The last person to see Amy alive was Simon, the son of a family friend, but before he can be properly questioned he disappears.

Detectives Neal and Merry are led on a trail of shocking family secrets and crimes. Can this duo track down the murderer before anyone else dies? Stopping this tragic cycle of violence will put D.S. Merry’s life at risk in a thrilling and heart-stopping finale.

If you like Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, Ruth Rendell, or Mark Billingham you will be gripped by this exciting new crime fiction writer.

DEAD SECRET is the first in a new series of detective thrillers featuring D.S. Ava Merry and D.I. Jim Neal. Ava Merry is a young policewoman, recently promoted to detective sergeant. She is a fitness fanatic with a taste for dangerous relationships. Jim Neal is a single dad who juggles his devotion to his job with caring for his son.

Set in the fictional Northern city of Stromford, this detective mystery will have you gripped from start to shocking conclusion.

Pages: 263

Price: £1.99

Sounds like my kind of read.  It’s a debut novel and, bearing in mind it’s also a new addition to Amazon, there are only 12 reviews –  7 x 5* and 5 x 4*. All but one reviewer I looked at had reviewed books previously with various ratings. The book also has 14 reviews on with an average of 4.6*

The last person to see the victim has disappeared, shocking family secrets and crimes, and the two main protagonists seem interesting and not run of the mill. Sounds good. New authors have to start somewhere and the price is reasonable. I had a couple of minutes left and took a quick look inside. The writing seemed pretty good and I could happily have carried on reading if my time hadn’t been up. I know you can’t always tell from the first couple of pages but that peek decided me. So..

Would I Buy or Pass ~ I’d BUY

In fact, I have added it to my Kindle queue. I’ll get to it, along with the other I bought from this challenge…eventually 🙂

  1. A great sounding book, with plenty of good genuine reviews to back it up, book cover is eye-catching, it makes me ask questions gets my attention. Yes I think with the good price it would be a BUY from me too.

  2. Yeah, totally a buy for any crime fic lover, I’d say, it looks great. I wouldn’t, because I don’t like whodunnits, but I can see that this would be a good buy. I love the way you analyse the reviews, like I do!

  3. Hm, I’m not naturally drawn to crime, so I guess I’ll pass. I think there are just TOO many police procedural progs on TV and I feel I’m reaching saturation point. Having said that, I’m enjoying NO OFFENCE because its taking the genre and turning it on its head – its also full of humour. Black humour, but humour nonetheless.
