Friday Five Challenge ~ Buy or Pass ~ The Witch and the Englishman by JR Rain

Rosie Amber’s Friday Five Challenge, involves taking only five minutes to choose a book cover which appeals instantly. So take a few minutes, pour yourself a coffee…..and have a browse.

In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?

AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?

My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….

1) Go to any online book supplier,

2) Randomly choose a category,

3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,

4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book, and any other details.

5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,

6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?

I went with Kindle’s recommendations for me this week, and after scrolling through page after page it seemed I was doomed to disappointment… until I saw this..

Witch and psychic Allison Lopez returns in THE WITCH AND THE ENGLISHMAN…and her powers are stronger than ever, thanks to her close association with an immortal friend, and her coaching by a ghost witch. In book #2 of this series, Allison is asked to look into a murder mystery that’s much, much more than she ever bargained for. Luckily, she’s not alone in her battle against an ancient evil. 

On the Psychic Hotline, Allison speaks with an Englishman whose daughter is in big trouble. When Allison meets him, she learns that his daughter has been arrested for a murder she can’t remember. Allison also discovers that his hundred-year-old house has a dangerous entity living within…and it’s not the first time something bad has happened here. Allison enlists the help of her new friend, Ivy Tanner, a Hollywood actress, to get to the bottom of the haunting of the house on Mockingbird Lane. They must hurry before evil befalls the charming Englishman. 

THE WITCH AND THE ENGLISHMAN is 31,000 words, which is about 150 published pages. It’s the second novel in a bestselling supernatural series. 

The cover stands out, it’s says the book has something to do with the supernatural or magic even without the title giving it away. The author’s name stands out and JR Rain is always a draw anyway. The book description gives a good idea of the content so it’s easy to get an idea if it’s something I’d enjoy reading.

I like JR Rain’s novels very much but haven’t read any of this series. So far there are three books, this one was published last year and has eleven reviews with an average 4.3 out of 5* There’s one 2* and one 3* and both are not bad reviews..’easy to read’ and ‘seems like a good read’. The most helpful review is from Samantha, who has this to say..My opinion: J.R Rain is such a great Author and has once again given us a great book. First off I really think Allison should give Conn a chance. He seems sweet and really into her. I think that Allison and crew had their work cut out for them with the Demon. I think that Ivy is a great addition although she may be a bit too eager. Allison and Millicent have a lot to teach her. I look forward to the next book in this series and I highly recommend reading. You do want to start with book one in this series as it could be a bit confusing if you don’t.

 It’s a pity I chose book two, I think I would enjoy it. 

So would I BUY or PASS? I’m going to PASS for now and get book one first. I prefer to start series or trilogy from the beginning. I’m sure I’ll be buying this one eventually.
