In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?

AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?

My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….

1) Go to any online book supplier,

2) Randomly choose a category,

3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,

4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book, and any other details.

5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,

6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?

Inspiration failed me this week, too much other stuff going on in my head….like wanting to kill have serious words with the mortgage company people who seem to be doing everything they can to make the house moving process more difficult and stressful than it need be. Anyway, that’s another story. I clicked on my go to category – Crime/Thrillers/Mystery and went for the Hardboiled sub category.  I like this cover and the title caught my attention.

Hunter Prey

The book description

REVENGE MEANS CARRYING A LOADED SHOTGUN. She has been planning this for ten years. She’s thought of everything and trained for this one single night. Nothing could possibly go wrong. He’s a serial killer who has eluded the police for the last ten years. When his latest victim turns out to not be who she appears, the hunter will discover what it’s like to be the prey. When these two very determined foes clash, there will be blood. One way or another, only one of them is coming out of this alive…

The Kindle price is £1.99/$2.99 for 192 pages.

Nine reviews on Amazon UK with an average of 4.7* which did make me wonder. Then I had a look on Amazon US where the book has 193 reviews coming in at 4.6*. 73% of reviewers awarded 5* and there is only 8% in the 2/3* range.

A reviewer who gave 3* had this to say: Hunter/Prey, an e-book by Sam Sisavath is a fast moving, action packed tale of revenge.
Allie Krycek’s young sister had been killed by a demented serial killer so she readied herself by studying all of the moves necessary with an ex-cop and then devoted the next ten years to find and get him to `bite’ so she could return the favor. She finds him, he takes the bait, but all does not go according to plan. The results are presented in this tale of non-stop action that is all action lovers can want. Regrettably, a caveat required for this and other more pragmatic readers.

Reading through the reviews a recurring theme seems to be that the book is non stop action but with little to no character development. The fact that it’s a short book which apparently takes place over one night would, I imagine, make it difficult to develop the characters.

Would I BUY or PASS? I’m going to PASS. Shame really, since I actually chose the first book in a series this time! But the characters are very significant, naturally, a story isn’t all about the action. And I think being able to get to know and connect with characters is very important to the enjoyment. Perhaps the development will increase with the following books.

  3. I did laugh when I saw the book title, Cathy, I think there may be a subliminal message to your mortgage providers there. The book cover is very strong, I like it, but the genre isn’t one I greatly go for , so a pass from me today.
