Will this dangerous game end in tragedy for Special Agent Maggie Kincaid?
A Senator’s daughter’s life hangs in the balance, and the FBI have suffered a deadly blow. Now Maggie and Jake O’Connor must throw away the play-book and go rogue to rescue the teen victim – before a political conspiracy silences them all for good. But with lives hanging in the balance, there’s no room for error. Will Maggie’s own traumatic past be the key they need to unlock the case – or the weapon that will destroy them all?
This is the conclusion to the trilogy – or is it? The trauma that shaped Maggie’s life is brought to the fore, but more of that later. The story carries on from exactly where the previous one ended.
Mancuso, Layla and another hostage with a bomb strapped to his torso, are trapped in a remote cabin, surrounded by the FBI and a SWAT team. Maggie and Jake know they are rapidly running out of time. Layla is close to slipping into a diabetic coma and Agent Paul Harrison, the second hostage, only has to make one wrong move and the cabin and its occupants are likely to be blown to pieces.
As Maggie is negotiating with Mancuso to let a doctor in to check on Layla, he makes a comment before disconnecting the call which leaves her reeling.
She had to guide him in the right direction in order to get the hostages to safety.
“Fine,” Mancuso said. “But no-one else id allowed in. No matter what happens tonight, you and I are in this together.”
For a moment, it almost didn’t register. For an impossibly long moment, she thought she’d heard wrong. She had to have heard wrong. He couldn’t have said what she thought he did….
But he had.
The situation is critical, made even more so by the arrival of the inscrutable Mr Black, who immediately orders Maggie and Jake off the case. As Jake’s secret investigation into Mr Black reveals who he is, and crucially, who he’s working for, they take matters into their own hands, risking everything to save the hostages and uncover the extent of the corruption which goes so much deeper than they imagined.
I enjoyed this very much, the suspenseful plot kept up the pace with lots of unexpected twists. Although the criminal element of the story is tied up nicely, the question regarding Maggie’s past is left unanswered and her own and Jake’s futures are undetermined. Hopefully these issues will be concluded at a later date, in a full length novel. Tess Diamond is an author to watch out for.
