When a man is found dead at the remote church of Heavenfield, DCI Ryan is the only other person for miles around. The police have no weapon, no motive and no other suspects.
The fabulous story arc, which began in Holy Island and was carried through into Sycamore Gap, now concludes with Heavenfield. DCI Ryan is suspended from duty on the orders of DCS Gregson and when he finds a body, the victim known to him and very close to his girlfriend Anna, in a remote location, he falls under suspicion. DI Denise Mackenzie is given the job of lead investigator, working with DS Frank Phillips and DC Jack Lowerson. All three are fully aware Ryan had nothing to do with the murder, but have to follow procedure in order to clear him, nonetheless.
“Why don’t I tell you what happened?” Ryan offered, to make life simple. “At approximately four o’clock this afternoon, I received a text message from a number I didn’t recognise. You can check my phone to confirm. The message appeared to be from Mark Bowers, telling me that he needed to meet with me urgently this evening, at Heavenfield Church, at nine o’clock sharp. He said there was something that I needed to see. The message went on to say that Anna would be in danger if she or anyone else knew about the meeting, so I shouldn’t tell her.”
The evidence from this murder leads to other suspected members of the Circle of devil worshippers, which first came to light in Holy Island, who mysteriously also are found dead. Even though Ryan is officially off the case, he conducts his own investigation in collusion with his team, and finds himself in an extremely dangerous position – a person to be eliminated. The members of the Circle will go to any lengths to protect themselves, and as their numbers decrease drastically the police are working at full stretch with several linked cases running concurrently. The situation comes to a head in a dramatic and perilous confrontation.
The series is peopled with strong, realistic and well defined characters, who have developed along with the story. The relationship between them is great, they have an affinity and can depend on each other completely. The writing is engaging with a suspenseful and compelling plot. I like the mixture of crime and history, with a dash of romance. And I didn’t come close to guessing the ending, which is always a plus.
What I love about this series, apart from the story line of course, are the landmark, historical settings. Each one is a mysterious, beautiful and evocative place, described wonderfully – Lindisfarne (Holy Island), Sycamore Gap in Northumberland’s National Park and now Bamburgh Castle and St Oswald’s, a small stone church perched on a hill at Heavenfield. I was particularly intrigued to read the history of Holy Island and I’m looking forward to visiting all these places later in the year.
