Finally free to be together on the remote Irish isle of Innishmahon, campaigning journalist Marianne Coltrane and her movie star partner, Ryan O’Gorman are looking forward to life away from the bright lights of Hollywood and the constant pursuit of the paparazzi.

Secrets of the Heart is the final instalment of the Heartfelt series. Marianne Coltrane’s birth parents, reunited after years apart, have finally tied the knot and she couldn’t be happier. The fabulously flamboyant Kathleen MacReady and Brian Maguire are in Dublin on honeymoon after a lovely wedding day.

Marianne is looking forward to her lover, movie star Ryan O’Gorman and his son, Joey’s return to Innishmahon for Christmas. However, nature conspires to throw a spanner in the works in the shape of a vicious storm which shuts down all transport to and from the island. The new harbour wall and the structure for the bridge, replacing the one that was washed away in last year’s storm, are under threat from the huge crane. Still, a mere storm wasn’t going to stop Ryan keeping his promise to be home for Christmas with Joey, whatever risks he had to take.

Minutes later, the glitterati sipping cocktails in the Glasshouse – the fabulous nightclub nestled in the roof garden of one of London’s most famous hotels – became aware of a thundering noise, far louder than the storm which had been rattling the crystal structure since dusk. A large military-style helicopter hovered outside, attempting to land on the H on the roof, but the wind kept pushing it back over the edge of the building, despite the pilot’s valiant efforts. A door on the roof opened, and a man wearing a balaclava ran across the tarmac to where the helicopter shuddered, feet above the surface. There was bundle strapped to his chest.

“My God, is that what I think it is?” shrieked a woman.

The door to the aircraft opened, as the man reached it. He leapt into the air. Another man inside the helicopter leaned out, grabbing him, as he clambered aboard. The door shut.

The islanders pull together in the wake of the storm, making sure everyone has the best Christmas they possibly can. And between them an idea is born to raise the necessary funds for the now critical repairs, which brings previous characters back to the island. Inevitably, nothing is straightforward and fears, losses and concerns have to be faced. The story threads are all brought together in a terrific conclusion.

As with the other two books, Secrets of the Heart is wonderfully crafted, the engaging mix of characters vividly drawn and credible, and to top it off there’s the evocative and beautiful island of Innishmahon. Alongside the romance there’s drama, secrets uncovered, suspense, surprises and emotional impact. Adrienne Vaughan’s writing is captivating and colourful, a joy to read.

About Adrienne Vaughan

Adrienne Vaughan has been making up stories since she could speak; primarily to entertain her sister Reta, who from a very early age never allowed a plot or character to be repeated – tough audience. As soon as she could pick up a pen, she started writing them down. It was no surprise she wanted to be a journalist; ideally the editor of a glossy music and fashion magazine, so she could meet and marry a pop star – some of that came true – and in common with so many, still holds the burning ambition to be a ‘Bond Girl’! She now runs a busy PR practice and writes poems, short stories and ideas for books, in her spare time. She is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and a founder member of the indie publishing group The New Romantics4. Adrienne lives in Leicestershire with her husband, two cocker spaniels and a retired dressage horse called Marco.
