I’ve seen this meme around a few times. Began by Renee at It’s Book Talk, the idea is to choose a book that’s been in your to be read pile for over 12 months. Either a favourite book or one that keeps getting lost in the ever growing stack waiting to be read.

My choice is Night Road by Kristin Hannah. It’s been on the shelf for some time. I’ve read Kristin Hannah before and really enjoyed her books, not sure why this keeps getting pushed back.

  2. That’s so interesting. I have also enjoyed other books by this author, but just never felt I could face this one.

    When I first heard of Night Road, a good friend and I had both just sent our youngest kids off to college. We were planning an empty-nester road trip together when we got the news that her daughter had been killed by a drunk driver while she was out jogging. Months later my friend told me that along with the grief and anger, she kept thinking that it just wasn’t FAIR. She had put in her 18 years, sent a spectacular young woman into the world, and now she was supposed to get all the good payback–enjoy her child’s success, look forward to grandchildren perhaps. She still had all the pride and hopes and achievements– just nowhere to put them.

    I knew exactly what she meant because my eldest daughter had also been hit by a car her first semester of college. Those same thoughts were in my head as I sat on the plane taking me out to Arizona. Luckily she recovered but it was just that–luck.

    With all of that so real to me, I think I’ve always just associated Night Road with emotions that I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t support.

    1. Oh goodness, Barb, with those associations it’s no wonder you have a block where this book is concerned. I’m so sorry for your friend and very glad your daughter was ok. It’s amazing how something like a book can bring emotions back in full force.

  5. This book sounds great but you’re braver than me, I always a wimp when it comes to reading about things happening to kids and families, even if the kids are older. I’m like… or I could just read that nice escapist romance instead 😉
