Portmeirion was designed and built in the Italianate style by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between the 1920s and 1970s, with colourful, elaborate buildings.
A charitable trust now owns the village, and it’s a tourist attraction with hotels, holiday cottages, eateries and shops.
There are beautiful coastal walks and woodland gardens
Portmeirion has inspired writers and TV producers and has been used for exterior TV and film shots and music videos.
Probably the most famous of these was The Prisoner with Patrick McGoohan in the 60s.

I remember going here after watching The Prisoner in the 70s – I did watch it when it was first on in the 60s but didn’t remember it so well as I was only a child! Oddly enough, I did understand it, though….

It’s years since I visited Portmeirion but your photos have reminded me of what a magical place it is. The first time we went was the day they celebrate The Prisoner and we thought we’d walked into a parallel universe. 🙂

Brought back happy memories Cathy.. I was assistant manager of a hotel between Dolgellau and Barmouth in the late 1970s and this was a favourite place for days off.. thanks Sally
