When You’re on the Edge, It’s Easy to Fall
These are stories of lives on the edge.
A girl tortured by the world within her. A boy powerless to escape his home. A mother doomed to live with her greatest mistake. A man lost in a maze of grief.
Each raindrop provides a microscopic mirror of ourselves and those around us. But we can’t always trust what we see. The distorted images disorient the mind, altering our view of reality.
Having read Sarah Brentyn’s first collection, Hinting at Shadows, I was looking forward to reading On the Edge of a Raindrop. I’ve been dipping in and out of it for a little while, sometimes re-reading particular sections. It’s amazing what can be conveyed in just a few sentences, or even words. The book is divided into three sections – Mindscapes, Lifelines and Microbursts.
Mindscapes and Lifelines are flash fiction, a fragment of someone’s life, sometimes sad, sometimes shocking, but always with a dark edge, making you think, and wonder what brought them to this point. Snapshots evoking powerful and fascinating images which display the complexity of human emotions and what lead to decisions taken….thoughts, situations and worlds exposed.
Microbursts, some of which are written in the form of a haiku, are told in under fifty words, some much less, but all suggest something much deeper and sometimes quite disturbing.
Lightening lit the room then plunged me into darkness. I was petrified. Not of the storm, but of the thing I’d seen next to my bed.
Adding this to my must-read pile! I loved Hinting at Shadows 🙂
