Detective Josie Quinn is horrified when she’s called to the house of a mother who had her newborn baby snatched from her arms.
A woman caught fleeing the scene is Josie’s only lead, but when questioned it seems this mysterious girl doesn’t know who she is, where she’s from or why she is so terrified…
Is she a witness, a suspect, or the next victim?
After the traumas in the first book, Vanishing Girls, Acting Police Chief Josie Quinn is planning her wedding to fiancé, Luke. But Luke is behaving strangely and Josie can’t get to the bottom of what’s bothering him. Before anything can be resolved she gets an urgent call from her second-in-command, Lieutenant Noah Fraley. Since her promotion Josie has missed being in the field and welcomes the opportunity to be hands on again.
Those who are familiar with the characters from the first book will remember promiscuous stripper Misty Derossi, the woman Josie’s husband fell in love with. Misty has been found badly beaten and the indications point to the fact she has very recently given birth. The new-born infant is nowhere to be found. The search for the baby takes priority and the investigation takes a surprising and unwelcome turn for Josie when Luke is caught on CCTV in Misty’s company, tying him to the case. When Josie drives out to his house to question him she finds a bloody crime scene and no Luke.
She followed the streaks of blood from the door to the kitchen, where a large splatter fanned across the painted white cabinets. Pools of it collected on the tile floor. She studied the cabinets, walls, and even the ceiling for bullet holes, just to be sure, but the spatter was more consistent with a stab wound. Judging by the drag marks along the floor, the victim—please don’t let it be Luke—had initially been stabbed in the kitchen, lain there for some time, and then been dragged outside onto the porch.
The Girl With No Name is a very fast paced, intense read. Lisa Regan masterfully weaves together a complex plot of seemingly unconnected threads as leads are followed and information gathered. Non stop action racks up the tension and keeps everything moving as Josie struggles to keep her personal feelings under control. A frightened, nameless woman wearing Luke’s clothes is Josie’s only lead, yet even so Josie can’t rely on her as a witness and nothing about the case is making sense. The random news reports scattered though the narrative are a nice touch add a little extra mystery until suddenly all becomes clear.
I warmed more and more to Josie in this story, her development is ongoing and, quite apart from her childhood trauma, she’s had a lot to cope with in her life. Nevertheless she’s a strong personality and determined to do her job to the best of her ability, not content to let others do the work. Lives are at stake and time is rapidly running out. Luckily she has Noah to back her up, always there as the voice of reason, supportive, sensible and a great foil for Josie even if she doesn’t always take the advice given. This is an excellent series, I’m looking forward to seeing what unfolds in book three and finding out more of Josie’s backstory.
