Incredible to think that the hermitage, dating from the early 14th century, was originally cut out of the rock face, especially when you venture inside and see the carvings.

Later additions were built in stone. It was founded and maintained by the lords of Warkworth castle and the only way to get there is by rowboat across the river. 

There would have been more to the hermitage when it was in use, consisting of two levels.

The accessible upper level contains a chapel with rib vaulting, an altar, piscina, a sacristy and a chamber, possibly the priest’s living quarters. The lower level would have housed the kitchen and hall.

The building is now under the care of English Heritage and opens 2-4 days a week depending on the season and the river current.
