Plas Newydd is a country mansion and estate of over 150 acres, set on the banks of the Menai Strait near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (no, I have no idea how to pronounce it 😆) with far reaching views over to Snowdonia. First built in the 14th century the house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century and was home to the present Marquess of Anglesey, now under the care of the national Trust.

Lovely to see these gorgeous views when the rain is lashing down here – a reminder that the sun does shine sometimes.

It’s lashing down here to, Mary. Days like the one here are few and far between, we have to make the most of them.

Absolutely amazing, Cathy! “Beautiful” doesn’t begin to describe it. And I can’t believe you don’t know how to pronounce the name. Looks easy enough to me. 😀 Any chance you know what the flowers are in the close up picture? Some kind of thistle, maybe? Very interesting. I’d LOVE to spend an afternoon strolling around the grounds! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Most of the Welsh language is beyond me, Marcia 😄 I was hoping someone would know what those flowers are. They do look like a thistle variety – a giant one at that.

If you find out about the flowers, I’d love to know. As for the other, I think someone forgot to explain vowels to the Welsh. Or they developed some kind of aversion to them early on. 😀 Such a beautiful country, though, I’d sure love to visit. I’d forgive them the impossible words if I could spend some time exploring there. 😉 Your pictures are very enticing! Thanks for sharing. ❤

I’ve been doing a little googling…it looks very like a variety of the cardoon plant, also known as the artichoke thistle.
Yes, I think there’s definitely an aversion to vowels 😁

Must visit here one day, especially as we’re members of the NT and Anglesey isn’t that far away.

Too bad you couldn’t go inside. Although that shadow dancer on the scrim screen was amazing.

We did go inside but lots of areas were cordoned off. The shadow dancer was a great distraction.

I found it by chance. Just saw the sign for Red Squirrels and turned in. Didn’t see any squirrels though!

Cathy, I’ve only ever seen one red squirrel and that was about three weeks ago in France. It ran across the road in front of us. I was thrilled because I’ve only ever seen grey squirrels 🙂

The mansion and all its views, the gardens… I cannot possibly imagine what it would be like to live in a place like this. I wonder what the original owner was like. Was he haughty? Was he benevolent? Was he cruel or considerate? This is an amazing place!
