My Thoughts
Hattie Goes To Hollywood features one of my favourite characters from a couple of Caroline James’ previous books, although it’s not necessary to have read those to enjoy this one.
Recently bereaved, Hattie Mulberry has inherited her aunt’s cottage in the small fictional village of Hollywood, set in the picturesque Cumbrian countryside, and complete with pub, village green and local shop.
Hattie’s newly acquired cottage is quite dilapidated and although she is in the process of renovating with lots of help from her neighbour, Marjorie and also Alf, an old friend/handyman, she is bored. Used to a busy life, when Marjorie asks Hattie to look into the apparent suicide of her husband, she jumps at the chance and her newly formulated plan, H&H Investigations, becomes a serious venture. She can always rely on the help of her dear friend, policeman Harry the Helmet if necessary.
Hattie is as full of life and engaging as I remember, always ready for what she calls a ‘livener’ and seems to have found a new best friend…Drake the duck takes up residence in her back garden. A new relationsip of the human variety also seems on the cards.
With a wonderful cast of well developed characters and lots of humorous quips, particularly from Alf, there’s never a dull moment in Hollywood. Hattie has integrated well into village life. Finding out there has been more than one suicide is a shock and Hattie is determined to find out what’s been going on.
Hattie Goes to Hollywood is a well written and fun cosy mystery, well plotted with a larger than life leading lady.
