Ten years ago, Danielle ‘Dani’ Jackson graduated from Coastal State University in Wilmington, North Carolina and left her heartache behind – for what she thought was forever. Now a promising pediatric surgeon at Boston Children’s Hospital she has been invited back for her college reunion.

Told in the first person from Dani’s point of view, the story begins in the present as Dani receives an invitation to her college reunion. She had applied for and been accepted at Coastal State University despite her parents’ disapproval at her choice. Now living in Boston with one more year left before her fellowship ends, Dani is reluctant to revisit her past. She and her friends, Addie and Callie, drifted apart after they graduated. The heartache caused by the tragic death of Dani’s friend and roommate and the thought of Jake Dillon, her first love, were things she’d rather not resurrect. Addie was always the persistent one, though, and nothing has changed. She is determined to get Dani to the reunion. Dani agrees to attend, with little enthusiasm.  Continue reading
