#SundayStills this week asks the question where would you rather be? I’d rather be…beside the sea… The #SundayStills Monthly Colour Challenge for March is any shade of green. These are a few of my choices. New visitor to the garden. All the little birds disappeared to safety. This was a bittersweet read as it seems it’s the last in what has been one of my favourite series, despite a little frustration with with the Ruth/Nelson storyline. The indecisiveness continues with Ruth second guessing herself, even though Nelson and Michelle have separated after his soul searching at the end of the previous book. #sunset This novella is deceptive in its seeming simplicity and succinctness, and packs an emotional punch. It’s told in the first person by an unnamed young girl who is sent to live with relatives because her mother is pregnant yet again and the impoverished family is struggling to cope. The girl has known nothing but hardship, has no idea what to expect in her new home but is observant and quick to pick up on nuances. Cute blue tit waiting for his turn at the feeders ‘Death is no stranger. I have known it. Tasted it. Seen its violent colours. Its abrupt finality. Yet still, I didn’t see it coming.’ The Mysterious Mr Badman is an easy, enjoyable and measured read, set in the beautiful Yorkshire landscape, with well realised characters, engaging prose and subtle humour. I was surprised to learn in Martin Edwards’ introduction that W.F. Harvey has a reputation as ‘a master of the macabre.’
