When I’m stuck for a search topic I trawl my go to category, that being Crime/Mystery/Thriller. This cover stood out. I think it depicts the title very well with the black and white image of an empty beach and an angry-looking sky, creating a forbidding and unsettling atmosphere. Continue reading

I’m deviating a bit this week for my Friday Five Challenge. I was approached by Astor+Blue Editions to put together a Spotlight post, with an excerpt, for a book called Imaginary Things by Andrea Lochen, which went out last week. The cover is intriguing and I liked it as soon as I saw it. It symbolises the title extremely well, with a misty, mystical feel to it and the suggestion of a creature outlined in pinprick lights. I hadn’t put anything specific into the search, just aimlessly trawling. I don’t know what made me look twice at this cover but the more I did the more intrigued I became. The title in large red letters, as though to stop you going any further, and the text ‘The Perfect Marriage or the Perfect Lie’ seemed ominous. The door on the cover looks like it might have been forced by the lock.  A weather related search again this week after some unbelievably strong winds that I could hardly stand up against and actually blew out the window of Cafe Nero! We were up at stupid o’clock this morning chasing the recycle bins down the road, so no guesses as to what I put in the search. The cover, and very apt title, interested me. This is the kindle cover, the paperback cover is not nearly as eye-catching. I like this image, the colours and fonts, even though it doesn’t really give a definitive idea of the story it made me stop and look. Continue reading

Please only vote for a book that you believe deserves an award.  We value everyone’s contribution and you are not required to vote in each category; it may be that you will…

Science Fiction and Fantasy was this week’s choice and the cover image of The Vagrant by Peter Newman stood out.

TheVagrant

The book description reads:

The Vagrant is his name. He has no other.

Years have passed since humanity’s destruction emerged from the Breach.

Friendless and alone he walks across a desolate, war-torn landscape.

As each day passes the world tumbles further into depravity, bent and twisted by the new order, corrupted by the Usurper, the enemy, and his infernal horde.

His purpose is to reach the Shining City, last bastion of the human race, and deliver the only weapon that may make a difference in the ongoing war.

What little hope remains is dying. Abandoned by its leader, The Seven, and its heroes, The Seraph Knights, the last defences of a once great civilisation are crumbling into dust.

But the Shining City is far away and the world is a very dangerous place.

So far, so good.  There are 22 reviews, 16 of which are five star, the others four and three star and it has an overall rating of 4.5 stars. The reviews I looked at were positive and full of praise, even the lesser ones were fairly good.

Kindle price ~ £6.99

No of pages ~ 400

Buy or Pass ~ I’ll PASS

I was tempted but it’s too high a price for a Kindle book and a debut novel. The paperback is only £2 more. If this came down in price I think I’d give it a go. There’s a huge number of books in this category and I’d read a quite a few that came up initially, a couple of which were only £1 and the highest was £3.66. I chose the audio in that one though. Out of 18 reviews on Amazon US 12 are one star and all are because of the price; a whopping $19.90 for a Kindle copy! Which at the moment converts to £12.85! Who sets these prices.

I had a quick check of some reviews on Amazon UK and there were several of the short, couple of lines five star variety and hadn’t reviewed books before, which made me wonder. The in-depth reviews I looked at were from reviewers who had a list of book reviews. So, in the end, it’s a pass because of the price, which is a shame. A lesser price would, I’m sure, result in more sales.

That aside, I love The Vagrant’s cover. It says Post Apocalyptic, epic quest and lone hero winning out over any odds the destroyed world can throw at him. That appeals to me. It kind of reminds me of Jay Posey’s book, Three, which I love. The sample ‘look inside’ was promising and I could have carried on reading.

I chose to look at Romance this time. It’s not a category I normally head for and this was one of the first ones on the list. The cover caught my attention straight away. Intriguing and atmospheric.

Holy Island

The book description: Detective Chief Inspector Ryan retreats to Holy Island seeking sanctuary when he is forced to take sabbatical leave from his duties as a homicide detective. A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby Priory.

When former local girl Dr Anna Taylor arrives back on the island as a police consultant, old memories swim to the surface making her confront her difficult past. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight, while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.

Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set on the spectacular Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne, cut off from the English mainland by a tidal causeway.

The description is a good enough hook and the premise sounds interesting. I like the fact it states there’s ‘a sprinkling of romance’ and hope this is accurate.

Number of pages – 423

£2.56 is a reasonable price for a Kindle edition

64 five star reviews, 21 four star and 22 lesser reviews on Amazon UK. It doesn’t get such good ratings on Amazon US with 5 five star reviews and 10 spread across the other ratings.

Buy or Pass? I’d BUY

I like that the book description doesn’t read like a straight romance. I’m quite happy with a non soppy romance which has another layer, whether it’s crime, thriller and/or paranormal. And, judging by the reviews I skimmed, this has the thriller and intrigue additions to give it that bit extra. The blurb sets up the storyline well and intrigued me, especially with the setting of Lindisfarne, an island that has an appeal. I hope it doesn’t turn out to be more romance than mystery. Some of the reviews on Amazon US are less than complimentary. It’s the author’s debut novel and the first of a series. I do love a series and have actually bought this one so we’ll see. Watch this space 🙂

I’m Taking Rosie Amber’s Friday Five Challenge @rosieamber1 #FridayFiveChallenge The Happy Puppy Handbook by Pippa Mattinson

I looked at the category list in Amazon, went for Science and Nature and this cover caught my eye almost immediately. How could I resist! And who knew this would be in Science and Nature. Well, I didn’t anyway.

HappyPuppy

The book blurb reads….Pippa Mattinson, dog-training specialist, tells you everything you need to know about training and caring for your new puppy. From preparing the house and garden before the puppy arrives, to introducing your new friend to all the family (including children and other animals), and solving problems like crying, night waking, feeding, upset stomachs, biting, chewing and jumping up, this book is packed with all you need to know as a puppy owner.

I think that says it all really.

Number of pages – 224

On Amazon UK there are 136 five star reviews, 17 four star and only 8, all told, in the lower ranges and out of 17 reviews on Amazon US 16 are five star and one three star.

Buy or pass? I’d BUY.

If I was in the market for a new pup (actually I’m always in the market 😉 it’s the other half who’s not) I’d definitely go for this book, but the Kindle price of £7.93 is on the high side. When I looked at other options I could buy brand new hard copies from other dealers at considerably lower prices. A good deal is to be had for members of Amazon Prime but, as I’m not a member, I would buy the book from one of the other sources. Checking out a few reviews it seems the general consensus is it’s clear, informative and easy to follow, covering everything a new puppy owner would need to know, as well as the more experienced dog owner, along with training tips and guidance. Apparently the author can be contacted for advice which is a nice touch.
