Holy Island is a debut novel and since this was published four more books in the series have followed, which I’ve also read. The beautiful cover attracted me immediately and I chose it for my second of Rosie Amber’s Friday Five Challenges – which you can find here – where we had five minutes to choose a book which appealed based initially on the cover and the blurb. Apart from the appeal of the cover, crime/mystery is a favourite genre. Because I chose to buy I mentioned the fact I hoped it wouldn’t turn out to be more romance than mystery. It didn’t! Far from it.  Continue reading

This week I’d like to share a book I really enjoyed – The Cunning Woman’s Cup by Sue Hewitt. It’s contemporary fiction with paranormal and historical threads.

When Alice McCleish’s gardener Brian unearths an object of great archaeological significance deep under the compost heap it is not only Alice and her burgeoning friendship with Margaret Allerton, retired Professor of Anthropology, that are affected: the family, friends and neighbours of Alice, who people the narrative, are also touched by subsequent events. Alice and Margaret find themselves questioning long-held beliefs about the material and spiritual world that surrounds them; and both women find their lives transformed unalterably by their newfound companionship.
