Will she follow the pack…

Or will she destroy them?

A dead mother.

A violent father.

A missing brother.

When Mia’s father is murdered, it’s her estranged uncle that comes to the rescue, but what he offers her in return for his help could be worse than the life she is leaving behind.

A compelling opening scene finds sixteen year old Mia witness to the violent death of her abusive father at the hands, or should I say fangs, of a werewolf. With no immediate family to look after her, she is taken in by her uncle, Sebastian Roberts, who runs Hood Academy, a boarding school for gifted girls. Girls who are being taught to hunt werewolves. Fallen On Good Times ~ A Pilgrim’s Wane Novel

  • FallenAuthor: Rewan Tremethick
  • Published: June 2014 by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform.
  • Category: Hardboiled/Noir, Paranormal
  • five-stars

Fairy tales are warnings. Legend is history. Monsters are real.

America, 1920. The city of Pilgrim’s Wane. The people on the street can be dangerous, the ones in the shadows even more so. Private Detective Laslo Kane is giving up. But then a brutal murder drives a terrified investor to offer Laslo a life-changing sum of money to solve the case.

The fee could set Laslo up for the rest of his life, assuming he still has one when he’s finished going up against the most dangerous crime family in the city.

Can Laslo survive and claim his fee, or will earning a living be the death of him?

Laslo Kane, a paranormal detective living in 1920s Pilgrim’s Wane during prohibition, is broke, down on his luck and minus his girlfriend. Not renowned for solving regular cases, Laslo deals with the supernatural and his two worlds overlap making solving crimes that much more difficult. And as most of the residents of Pilgrim’s Wane are oblivious to the vampires, werewolves, trolls and demons inhabiting the city, they tend to think of Laslo as incompetent. When an old lady asked Laslo to find her missing cat and was told it had been eaten by a sabre toothed tiger ‘she tried to have me committed.’ Laslo still bears five large claw marks and to add insult to injury he didn’t even get paid.

While contemplating a career change Laslo gets a job offer from Darius Targar to investigate the murder of his business partner, and bank robbers who are putting money into his account. With the promise of a huge fee which would get Laslo back on his feet and then some, and a down-payment of more than he’s earned in the last four months, Laslo is hooked. The huge downside is the fact the most powerful criminal organisation in the city is involved. The Pottellis, lead by the fearsome Adamar Pottelli, also have vampires, the undead and a werewolf available to them whenever they wish.

Vampires and werewolves banking I could understand. But depositing cash at gunpoint? Hell, if they were so desperate to give people money, I’d happily write down my account details for them. Obviously there was something more to it, something bad hidden behind what, on the face of it, seemed like a nice thing. It was like an alligator dressed as a chocolate bar.

Laslo enlists the help of his friend, journalist Rita Orbit, his go to person for information and to ‘chin about a tricky case’, now that his former girlfriend and the love of his life, Kitty, is no longer in the picture. As he connects the threads between several murders the clues lead him to the Pottellis and Laslo receives another, much larger offer placing him in an untenable position. That’s nothing new to Laslo, though…’This was my life. Whatever I tried to do, things always seemed to get deadly.’

An original and very entertaining book with an unconventional and extremely likeable protagonist. The story is narrated in the first person by Laslo with lots of humorous wisecracks, and mixes the paranormal with mystery and intrigue. All the characters are fleshed out, individual and compelling. Misty Joe, the ghost medium who didn’t realise he was dead, Rita, Kitty and her parents. Even the villains are great characters and they’re all fundamental to the plot. Hardboiled/Noir is a favourite genre of mine and the paranormal aspect of the story adds an interesting and innovative layer. Great pacing, impressive action sequences, especially at the end, and skilfully written, it’s hard to believe this is a debut novel. I love it and look forward to the next book.

RewanRewan (not pronounced ‘Rowan’) Tremethick is a British author who was named after a saint. St Ruan was invulnerable to wolves; Rewan isn’t. Rewan is a fan of clever plots, strong women who don’t have to be described using words like ‘feisty’, and epic music. Guardians Dynasty ~ Nature’s Destiny #3

Release Day Blitz Button

  • Guardian'sAuthor: Justine Winter
  • Kindle Edition

I was dying.

Every minute I wasted without a mate, my mind became more volatile. I was unbalanced, stronger than I was capable of handling alone.

Supposedly, I was destined for greatness, but apparently I had to overcome another task first.

A mating.

Riley was my one true love. I was sure. However, that didn’t necessarily mean I was his. Complications, it seemed, were becoming my forte.

Despite my personal problems, the demons emerged, offering little hope and even less mercy. With my mind preoccupied, I wasn’t ready for the attack heading our way.

The pack needed me now more than ever, but the demons were cunning, thwarting my plans and upping the stakes each time.

I was letting them down. We weren’t ready. I wasn’t ready.

Darkness descended on Nature’s Destiny, and sadness was sure to come.

War had begun.

Release Day TeaserIn Guardian’s Dynasty it’s another change for Luna as she and Riley must both decide if they are ready for the commitment of being true mates. A wolf mating is life long and irreversible but Luna is concerned the death sentence hanging over her will influence Riley’s decision. The only way to cancel out the threat is for Luna to mate with her one true love. It’s obvious to everyone else, though that Luna and Riley are meant for each other. To save Luna, she and Riley can’t afford to wait for the mating ritual ceremony to be organised so the second option has to be taken immediately.

‘Trust my brother to use the unconventional way of mating,’ Faye laughed.

Luna is now the female alpha and there must be a wedding party for the pack to acknowledge the mating. Which is when the trouble starts, beginning with the appearance of sink holes and the approaching Blood Moon, when the demons, according to legend, will take over the world.

As the wedding guests, including Luna’s parents and best friend, Sky are enjoying the celebrations Luna’s warning pains begin…and before anyone realises what is happening they are surrounded by incubi and Luna has gone…and things will never be the same for Sky.

Another full on instalment in the lives of Luna, Riley and the pack. There’s never a dull moment, lots of action, changes and romance. Luna is dealing with her newly acquired powers well and learning how to use them, finding out who she really is and her destiny. Justine Winter’s writing is very descriptive and imaginative and I love the cover art for the books, this one especially.

I was supplied with an ARC in return for my review.

Sapphire’s Divinity (Nature’s Destiny #2)

  • Sapphire's Divinity 3xAuthor: Justine Winter
  • Released: August 2014
  • Category: New Adult, Paranormal
  • four-stars

I received an ARC from the author in return for an honest review

I was a hybrid werewolf with a secret destiny shadowed by a prophecy the Ancient Guardians foretold. The same Ancient Guardians that had organised the annual Alpha summit Riley had been summoned to. Since Jackson’s demon threat everyone was powered up on overtime at the gym. Train, sweat, repeat. Train, sweat, repeat.

But all that rage-filled preparation wasn’t enough. We were being targeted by something new, and it didn’t stop there.

The summit was proving to be my nemesis. Egotistical morons challenged me with threats to the one I loved, and I knew I couldn’t endure a life without Riley.

Besides all of that, there was one thing I was finally understanding about the supernatural. Nothing was as it seemed.

Not even me.

This story takes place over the period of a week so there’s a lot going on. Luna and Riley are attending the Alpha Summit and Luna is coping well and learning to control, and work with, her wolf but still coming to terms and struggling a little with the consequences of her transformation. A lot of her uneasiness is rooted in the changing relationship with her best friend, Sky, and the fact she just cannot confide in her. Not because she doesn’t want to, she does, more than anything, but she is ever mindful of what it would mean for Sky.

Luna is also having strange and frightening prophetic dreams which leave her confused and unsure of their meaning. Do the dreams relate to the prophecy? How should she interpret them. She finds help and solace with the Ancient Guardians.

Luna and Riley’s relationship strengthens even though Luna sometimes keeps important encounters and feelings to herself, not wanting to add to the pressure on Riley as he faces an enormous challenge which will affect the whole of his pack, who still face threats from many quarters. The ending will lead nicely into the next story, although what events will mean for Luna and Riley only time will tell.

A good follow-up to Nature’s Destiny, I’m intrigued to see what happens next.

Nature’s Destiny #1

  • Nature'sDestinyAuthor: Justine Winter

  • three-half-stars

My life was changing, morphing into something greater than I could have anticipated. I was becoming something I didn’t recognise as myself anymore. A Werewolf. I was different. Bitten. ‘Hybrid’ was what they called me, and the weight that rested against that one word was crippling. They depended on me to bring them safety. What made me so special? Oh, that’s right. My destiny. I was sucked into a world I’d had no idea existed. Twenty-one years as a human, and this was what I found out. My travelling plans, my writing degree, all of it was gone within one night. One evil night that robbed my humanity. I wasn’t completely sour. Life had been unfair a while ago, only now I’d had something worth fighting for besides myself. Something to live for. I was afraid for the others. I couldn’t let them down. I wouldn’t let them down. I’d gone to bed a human and woken up a Werewolf. A special Werewolf.

I received a digital copy from the author in return for an honest review.

The cover art is lovely and I would have picked this book up based on that alone. The beginning of the story was good and piqued my interest with Luna getting bitten although she thought at the time she’d been mugged. Having said that I thought the probability of someone accepting so easily the fact she had been turned into a werewolf, being instructed to join Riley’s pack and move in with them and giving up her post uni travel plans, family and friends with hardly a second thought, was a little unrealistic. At the least I would expect some denial or resistance to what is a fairly unimaginable and complete life changing event.

I must admit, I had always thought the shift was without clothes and it was an uncomfortable if not painful transition but maybe I haven’t read enough werewolf books to know otherwise.

That isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy reading the story, I did. Werewolves are fascinating and I like the dynamics of the pack and the idea of a self-contained estate. The characters were more engaging as the story progressed.

The last few chapters of the book were action packed, although again, a little improbable in that the every one of the rogue wolves were killed in an all out battle without any casualties to speak of in Riley’s pack.

It was, perhaps, a touch over romanticized for me but I will be checking out the next instalment.
