The countdown to Christmas is usually a magical time, but Elena James is fed up with living on a building site! Luke’s kind, capable and sexy – but he’s also ten years younger than Elana. So why has her heart decided it’s finally time for a thaw?

The perfect read to curl up by the fire with … for fans of Rebecca Boxall.

Elana James and her young daughter, Maya, are approaching their second Christmas without Niall, Elana’s husband and Maya’s father, who was killed in a tragic road traffic accident. Bay Tree Cottage is a work in progress, which isn’t actually progressing much at the moment as Elana was left mortgage free but without the funds to tackle all the renovation work needed. And more bad news comes from her good friend and next door neighbour, Eve. Under The Stars

For twenty-one years, the focus of Katherine Dale’s life has been her work. Love interests and hobbies came and went, but what has always been there for her—her only constant other than her cat delightfully named No. 4—was her nine to five habit. Until she’s replaced. With her confidence dented, Katherine is angry at life and at herself. She has ignored hints of “changes to come” in her horoscope forecasts, written by the wonderful and renowned astrologer, Mark Ainsley-Thomas.

My thanks to Linn Halton and Brook Cottage Books for sending a copy for review

Under The Stars is narrated in the first person from three perspectives; Katherine’s, Mark’s and James,’ each with their own titled chapters.

Katherine Dale is at a crossroads in her life, having just lost the job which has been her life for the last twenty-one years. Hoping to forge a new career as a writer she is nevertheless angry and frustrated to find herself in this position after her years of dedication to, and enjoyment in, her job. She lives in the beautiful Cotswolds with No. 4, her brilliantly named cat. Katherine is an enthusiastic and devoted follower of Mark Ainsley-Thomas, an acclaimed astrologer, and sets great store by her daily personalised horoscopes. When her forecasts begin to appear unclear and not what she’s used to, Katherine finds herself becoming confused and unable to plan efficiently. ‘Perhaps he’s not feeling his usual self, or perhaps the astrological signs are being purposely obtuse.’

Since the death of Mark’s agent of many years he has cause to regret signing with his new agent, Harriet, as he finds himself on the fame circuit, spending a lot of time away from home and not having enough time to spend working on his forecasts. Mark is uncomfortable with the way Harriet is controlling his life and trying to make him a celebrity as fame and money aren’t his driving force.

I want to be famous for the accuracy and content of my forecasts, I want to help people who are struggling to find their way through some of life’s harsher moments. I feel that is my true and worthy destiny. But how do I explain that to someone like Harriet? The fact is, I don’t. Why? Because I’m a coward and she scares me to death.

James Kingman is going through a bad patch. Losing his inheritance on a disastrous business venture, along with his long-term relationship has dented his confidence badly. ‘I was worried about meeting Mark face to face because the gallery wasn’t just a flop, it was a spectacular disaster.’ As Mark’s schedule becomes more impossible he needs a promising assistant astrologer and James fits the bill. He takes over Mark’s daily horoscope forecasts, still under the Mark Ainsley-Thomas banner, and settles into his new career. Until, that is, he receives irate emails questioning his/James’ forecasts.

BCBHostThe story revolves around the astrology aspect, giving it an interesting spin that works well. I like Linn Halton’s style of writing very much, and how she is able to get right into the minds of the characters, reflecting on love and relationships as well as anxieties and vulnerability. This is helped by the multiple points of view which is a good way to show differing reactions to events and situations. I love the relationship between Katherine and James and the fact they didn’t relate well to each other initially. All the characters are well-developed and engaging, I especially like old Jake, James’ neighbour, his story and the interaction between the two of them. Each of the main characters are at some sort of watershed and as their stories are woven together Linn Halton creates a well-balanced narrative that’s a pleasure to read.

About the author

LBH author photoBristol-born Linn B Halton lives in the small village of Lydbrook, which nestles on the edge of the Forest of Dean, in the UK. She resides there with her husband and feline with ‘catitude’- Mr Tiggs.

Linn began writing in March 2009 and her debut novel was published in February 2011. In a recent interview Linn was asked about genres:

“From a very young age I knew romantic fiction was always going to be my genre. I am, and will always be, madly in love with love! Whether that’s love of life, a partner, or the things I’m passionate about.

My stories are about love, life and real relationships – but romance is always the one thing that holds each story together. Often there’s a light, psychic touch and I never dreamed I would write drawing upon my personal psychic experiences. But as my interest and understanding in the subject has grown, it is now such a part of my life that it finds its way into my fictional tales. However, what is heartening is that most of my experiences have been uplifting and it’s wonderful to know loved ones are around me always. I hope it will make readers stop and wonder ‘What if?’

The result is that I get a lot of mail from readers who have had similar experiences and some are sharing theirs for the first time with me. I always feel that’s something rather special and for which I’m very grateful.”

Love, life and beyond… but it’s ALWAYS about the romance! Linn is published by HarperImpulse, Endeavour Press and Sapphire Star Publishing.

Linn is also the managing editor of Loveahappyending Lifestyle emagazine.

She has ignored hints of “changes to come” in her horoscope forecasts, written by the wonderful and renowned astrologer, Mark Ainsley-Thomas.

Mark is now an “A” list celebrity in the UK and his new agent is determined to raise his profile in America. So, he has to take on the new, and very talented, astrologer James Kingman to help him run his web-site.

When Katherine discovers James has been writing the forecasts, rather than Mark, her life explodes in confusion as the three lives become inextricably tangled. Insecurity, self-doubt, guilt, stress, and frustration, coupled with village gossips and merciless reporters wanting eye-catching headlines leave Katherine feeling vulnerable and in need of guidance.

The stars might be telling her that love is going to feature in her life, but when Katherine finds herself implicated in the headlines ‘Mystic Love Triangle’ she’s just as surprised as everyone else! None of the men in her life are love interests – so what exactly does fate have in store?

About Linn B Halton

Trading Vincent Crow ~ Giveaway

51xfPkGeVULVince Crow had been party to a revelation the day before that was going to change his life forever. He was no longer one of the small town crowd that delighted in tales of vomiting into plant pots. Vince Crow was about to start living life differently.

Vince Crow had heard somewhere that you could trade a piece of useless junk on the internet and, within a year of swapping it for better and better things, get cool stuff. Crow decided that he himself was going to start off as that piece of tat, jump from one job to the next; indeed, he would trade one lifestyle for a new one, until he was finally a success. Every three months he would have to trade-up for an entirely new life – a new job, a new girl, new wheels, a new pad, new threads – until he reached the top.

The plan of comparing himself to a used item traded over the internet was of course marginally flawed, as there is a human factor to all of this which he’d overlooked. Besides, success isn’t just about work. It’s about the car, the clothes, the house, and getting the girl, so changing all of that with every new trade upwards is a lot more difficult than swapping an old stereo in the classifieds. Crow quickly learns what the price of success really is. An education he would never have got if he had gone to college…

Rosie's Book Review Challengers 1

Rose O’Carroll has been single for most of her 40 years. In her search for love she bravely decides to pack up her comfortable life in Australia and move to London. Guided by her special friends — her angels — she quickly settles in her new life; lands a great job; makes new friendships and begins her spiritual journey……

I Listened to My Heart takes us on an adventure with Rose O’Carroll, a 40 something single Australian who feels her life is going nowhere. Although she has a large and loving family she feels the need for drastic action to kick-start her love life, which comes in the form of a move to London. Rose firmly believes her angels are guiding her and she soon settles into her new life, making some lovely friends and hoping she’ll find ‘the one’ now her spiritual journey is underway.

You see, ever since I was a little kid I knew I had someone walking by my side and watching over me. I don’t know how I knew this as I never saw anyone, but I always felt this extraordinary sense of protection. I assumed it was my guardian angel, as growing up a Catholic there was always talk of angels – so it felt natural to me. Little did I know that in time, I was to develop a “special” connection with them.

However, crossing paths with the handsome American, Joe De Marco, sends her into a tail spin. Rose knows Joe is her twin soul mate but Joe is far from ready for that commitment and keeps Rose way past arms length. Rose believes everything happens for a reason and even though she is desolate about the ‘Joe situation’ and her emotions are in total chaos, she drives her friends mad with the conviction they will eventually get together, regardless of the way he is behaving.

The story spans ten tears of Rose’s life and lays all bare which is actually what makes it so realistic. It’s very down to earth and the characters are all well drawn and likeable. Rose is totally human in that she can have one (or three) too many and have to cope with a hangover the next day. And she likes her food! Along with a huge percentage of the population, now and again she needs to pull back and detox. Although she’s spiritual she’s not prissy or prudish. I love the bond between Rose and her family and friends and the closeness they share.

As Rose’s character grows and she delves deeper into her spiritual side she becomes aware of her ability for tarot reading among other things. As someone who is fascinated by the whole angel/spirituality thing, I find those aspects of the book especially interesting. The weekend retreat sounds intriguing too. The verse and Rose’s note to her angels at the beginning of each chapter is a lovely touch. As it says on the cover – a novel of faith, love and friendship – and that sums it up perfectly.

Summer 1930 and Walter Bruce is told he has a terminal disease. With nursing care and an easier job he could have five more years. With neither he may not see out the year. But he’s got a wife to keep – one too selfish and idle to be his nurse.

This novel is woven intricately around facts based on an actual, seemingly senseless and violent unsolved murder case from the 1930’s. Walter Bruce is an insurance salesman in a loveless marriage. He is diagnosed with a terminal illness and at the same time acquires evidence his wife has not only deceived him about her past all the years he’s known her, but has also been unfaithful. He formulates a plan to allow him to live out his remaining years in comfort, with the nursing and care he knows will not be forthcoming from his wife. There is no turning back. Bruce’s chess player’s mind devises the details of a plan and as that plan slowly unravels he must accept the terrible consequences of his actions.

The main protagonist is very difficult to like, yet at the same time, given his lifestyle and home life, there is a small amount of pity mixed in with the aversion. There are many restrictions in the between-the-wars world of lower to middle class Liverpool, but to dispassionately plot his wife’s murder and involve two other, equally distasteful characters, shows quite a calculating and cold nature.

The ability to plan and deliberately kill someone was not an accomplishment you could learn, like chess or the violin. When the intended victim was close to you, someone you lived with, it called for a hardness of heart, insensitivity to pity, indifference to suffering and denial of the sanctity of human life. You might have the idea but if you didn’t have these qualities you’d never progress beyond that. The point was though, he knew he did have them; had always had them.

The courtroom scenes are described in detail and, although at times I was overwhelmed with the specifics and technicalities, I appreciate the painstaking research and work that has gone into, not only this aspect, but the whole. Bruce’s feelings throughout are defined so vividly I almost felt I was the one in court. How very frightening to be in that position, especially knowing the evidence was being manipulated. Bruce thought he had orchestrated the ‘perfect murder’ and was totally unprepared for the final verdict, actually believing himself innocent of the specific charge of murder.

This fictional reconstruction of a classic, unsolved mystery is revised to reflect the possible scenario of Bruce plotting his wife’s murder and written with much of the original events and evidence, as the author states in his note at the end of the book…..’Much in the preceding pages follows the details of that case very closely, to the point that some of the dialogue is lifted directly from what was reported as having been said during the events, and, in particular from the then Liverpool City Police Force, and transcripts of the committal, trial and appeal court proceedings in the real Wallace case.’

As in the original case, there seems to all outside intents and purposes, no motive for the crime and only circumstantial evidence against the accused. As for the real-life murder, only William Herbert Wallace would be able to tell the truth of what happened in Anfield, Liverpool in 1931.

As a teenager, Jill Shannon fell victim to her stepfather’s cruel abuse. Now, as an adult, Jill’s made it—she has a successful career and a solid, if not static, marriage to Detective Alex Shannon. Together they live out what seems to be a perfect life in Seattle.

The vow she made as a teenager to never again be a victim lies dormant—until one day a reporter lures her to his hotel room under the pretense of an interview—and suddenly it all comes rushing back.

Jill seeks revenge on the reporter, triggering a series of events that leads Jill down a wormhole of retribution, forcing her to spin an ever-widening web of lies.

Meanwhile, Alex is on the case of a series of murders that began as cyber relationships. There seems to be a familiar fingerprint on these crimes, but Alex refuses to believe that the murderer could be so close to him.

Husband and wife stand on opposite sides of a divide created by lies and rooted in a dark and deadly past…

Alex and Jill are facing marital problems. Their jobs keep them apart for most of the week and it doesn’t help that Jill is having an affair with her boss, until, that is, he decides to move on to someone else. While trying to resolve the awkward situation Jill has manoeuvred herself into something totally unexpected and horrific occurs but after the initial shock she sees how this could work to her advantage.

After the abuse at the hands of her stepfather, Jill resolved never to be at the mercy of another man. When she is compromised by a reporter supposedly wanting an interview she takes matters into her own hands. Jill’s behaviour, even as you feel for the young girl she was, is totally disproportionate and spirals out of all control.

“Ready or not, here I come,” her stepfather, Master Sergeant Samuel Morris, called out in that creepy, singsong voice, like this was some sort of sick game.

Her hands shook, and she clasped them in a tight knot under her chin. Her mother’s scent – baby powder and cinnamon – filled the small space, enveloping her like a warm cloak, and she wished she could hide here forever. Safe. Untouched.

Tears stung her eyes. God, she missed her mother. It was bad before. His punishments had always been harsh, but since her mother’s death, everything had changed.

Alex is a detective with the Seattle Police Force and is investigating the disappearance of his ex fiancée’s sister, which is linked to a serial killer. During the course of his investigations he begins to wonder how much he really knows his wife. He realises she has changed in an elusive way but can’t quite rationalise how or why. He is shocked and unbelieving at where the clues are leading him.

This is a very skilfully written debut novel, with strong, well-developed characters. The absorbing storyline is full of intrigue and suspense. Alex is someone I could relate to immediately and, for all Jill is a very complex and complicated character, and because of childhood suffering I could understand, up to a very definite point, what drove her. And Alex’s partner, Jackson, is a great character too, always having Alex’s back.

The detail and descriptive prose gives a very intense and realistic slant….and the ending! I didn’t see that one coming! There is nothing I dislike about this book, although the ending did leave me quite shell-shocked. Definitely an author to look out for. Many thanks to JB Johnson at Brook Cottage Books for sending me a copy. So glad I didn’t miss this one.

 About the author

Chris PatchellWhen Chris Patchell isn’t hiking in the Cascade Mountains or hanging out with family and friends, she is working at her hi-tech job or writing gritty suspense novels. Writing has been a lifelong passion for Chris. She fell in love with storytelling in the third grade when her half-page creative writing assignment turned into a five-page story on vampires. Even back then Chris had a gift for writing intricate plots that were so good her father refused to believe she didn’t steal them from comic books.

Years later, Chris spent long afternoons managing her own independent record store and writing romance novels. After closing the record store and going to college, Chris launched a successful career in hi-tech. She married, had kids but amid all the madness, the itch to write never really went away. So she started writing again. Not romance this time – suspense filled with drama, and angst, speckled with a little bit of blood.

Why suspense? Chris blames her obsession with the dark on two things: watching Stephen King movies as a kid and spending ridiculous amounts of time commuting in Seattle traffic. “My stories are based on scenarios I live every day, distorted through the fictional lens. And my stories come with the added bonus of not having to be restrained by socially acceptable behavior.”

Falling ~ Angels Among Us (The Complete Series)

A note from Linn Halton…

As soon as I’d written, ‘The End’ to the third novella in my Harper Impulse series:

Angels Among Us

(FallingForbidden and Forever)

I knew it wasn’t quite the end. Well, I suppose that was obvious as I’d already come up with two endings for Forever. But that’s the way it is when you are writing a story. It has a life all of its own, but readers don’t always get to see that, as a book can only have one ending. However …

In this series, which is a mixture of research and fiction, with an over-riding love story to add as many complications as you can possibly want, the ideas were limitless.

But the ending has to do the story justice and Forever ends with a scene that needed an explanation. Whether or not you’ve read the three novellas, there’s a surprise waiting for you in Falling: The Complete Angels Among Us series.

What happened after ‘The End?’ Well, in the combined series edition that’s exactly what the reader will find out. Releasing on 9 October 2014 in ebook format and 17 December 2014 in paperback, by Harper Impulse, it’s available to pre-order on Amazon now.

My review

AngelsAmongUsCeri thinks she sees angels … everywhere. She struggles to keep separate what feels like two very different sides to her life. As a manager in an advertising company she’s been working with the gorgeous Alex for two years. The have a friendship based upon the image she portrays whilst she’s at work and it helps to keep her sane. One mad, crazy night spent sharing their secrets and a lot of wine result in them ending up in bed together and their relationship changes. When Alex explains that the reason he doesn’t date is because someone broke his heart, how can Ceri admit that she feels a deep connection to him?

Ceri is on a journey of self discovery, and learning what her gift for helping people and sensing the presence of angels, mainly by intuition, really means. She knows she is different but she doesn’t realise her gift is her calling and she is destined to be alone. She and Alex are only meant to cross paths briefly, he to help her when she is in doubt, and then to both go their separate ways. Neither of them understand Ceri is not supposed to fall in love during this earthly existence…

Ceri’s task is to correct mistakes people make that may alter the course of their destined lives. It was easy to like and  empathise with her, and Alex, especially when I read the passages from his point of view. They both suffer dreadfully because they are not destined to be together. Ceri is compassionate, astute and very confused about her feelings for Alex. As she begins to learn who and what she is and awakens more and more to her psychic abilities, the spiritual and theological aspects are explored in-depth and are very interesting and fascinating. The story focuses quite heavily on this perspective as Ceri learns her true calling.

I have no idea exactly when I began seeing angels, but I can’t seem to remember a time when I couldn’t. It feels like it’s always been a part of my life. It’s as natural as breathing and, yes, there are times when I wish that wasn’t the case. I seriously doubt anyone would choose to get drawn into something they don’t really understand. Why would they?

There is much development in Ceri and Alex’s relationship, as well as Ceri’s personal development, and as the two clash emotions run very high. Ceri must choose her path and either way, it’s not easy as she struggles with the powerful feelings between her and Alex. Should she heed what she now knows is her destiny, or choose to follow her heart?

Linn Halton’s writing style is fluid and easy to read, I was drawn in from the start. The story is filled with a multitude of emotions, highs and lows, and although the spiritual angle features throughout it’s not overwhelming and blends in well with the romance. There’s a lot to like and be drawn into in this book if you’re open to the otherworldly and metaphysical. I enjoyed exploring the premise there is more to this life than we think, and more beyond than is imaginable.

After initial misgivings (I’m not really into romantic fiction but this is more than a straight romance) I enjoyed reading this book a lot and give it a solid  four-stars rating. The paranormal/spiritual aspect made it for me. Many thanks to J B Johnson at Brook Cottage Books for sending me an ecopy.
